Excavation is the process of digging, moving and shaping earth to get a site ready for what comes next. Almost every building or property project starts in the dirt. Foundations need a solid, level base, driveways need a stable bed under the gravel or pavement, and yards need the right slope so snowmelt and spring rain run away from the house instead of into the basement. In Central New York, the ground freezes deep and thaws slowly every spring, and poorly prepared soil heaves, settles and cracks whatever sits on top of it. Skipping proper excavation might save a little time up front, but it usually costs a lot more later in repairs. Getting the digging right is what lets everything built on top of it last.

What Is Required For Excavation?
Every excavation job starts by walking the property and talking through the goal, whether that's a foundation, a driveway, drainage or a cleared site. We'll look at access for equipment, where the dirt can go and what needs to stay protected, like trees, septic systems or finished landscaping. Before digging, underground lines have to be marked through 811 (UDig NY), which can take up to two business days. Depending on the project, you may need a permit or approved plans from your city or town, so it's smart to check early. It also helps to tell us about any drainage problems you've noticed, since standing water says a lot about the ground.
